Why SMS Codes Fail to Arrive — and How to Fix It

5 min read · Updated September 23, 2026

Most verification codes arrive in under ten seconds. When one doesn’t, it is almost always one of five causes — and only some of them are on the number’s side.

1. The service never sent it

Apps silently refuse to send SMS when they distrust the request — usually the IP. A datacenter VPN, a flagged connection or too many signups from one address all cause it. Fix: retry behind a clean residential IP in the number’s country.

2. The number was used before on that service

"Number already registered" or an instant silent failure. Fix: buy a fresh number; the failed order refunds itself when no code was delivered.

3. The route is slow, not dead

International SMS sometimes crawls. The order timer exists for exactly this — most late codes land within a minute. Wait it out before spending anything again.

4. The service sent it somewhere else

Telegram sends to the app when an account already exists; WhatsApp offers a voice call after failed SMS attempts. Read the sending screen carefully — the code may not be travelling by SMS at all.

5. Wrong number format

XeroSMS shows the dialling code separately and copies the local number on its own, because most forms want them entered separately. If a form wants one field, it is the dialling code plus the local number, nothing else.

Money-back, automatically

An order that never receives a code expires and the full amount returns to your wallet without a support ticket. Trying again with a different country for the same service resolves the overwhelming majority of failures.
